Rat catching and removal in Wokingham and Winnersh

What we do

We will send out a technician to you within 24 hours of your phone call, we will place traps to catch the rats and carryout a survey of your property - this will include the neighbouring property in the event that you have a semi-detached or terraced house. Our goal is to find the entrance point that the rats are using so we can seal it up.
What we won't do

We do not use rodenticide or poison inside your home, rats will die from consuming the poison and there is no way we can predict where that will happen. Dead rats trapped within a building decompose and stink leading to swarms of bluebottles and eventually maggots.
How do rats get in the loft?

Just about every house built since the 1920's has a cavity wall: a simple inner skin of softer brick and a hard outer skin of brick, the cavities purpose is to help keep the house warm and keep it from getting damp. Many houses now have cavity wall insulation added to help with the thermal insulation - it doesn't matter to rats as the cavity is how they access the loft.

The inside of the cavity wall isn't the same as the two faces that you see; smooth rendered on the inside and flush pointing on the brickwork outside, the cavity wall has metal ties that stretch across the gap binding the two walls together and then there's the snots. Snots is the name given to the mortar that gets squished out when the bricks are laid, this is wiped off by the bricklayer on the inner and outer faces but it can't be reach on the inner so they're left.

The combination of the snots and the metal ties means that rats can easily climb the cavity to reach the loft where its nice and warm; but you have cavity wall insulation I hear you say. No problem for the rats as this is a soft fluffy material or its made from tiny polystyrene balls, both of which will be compressed and dug through by the rats - occasionally we can see this material spread outside the property where it has been carried out by the rats on their fur.
Can rats get into my house from the drains?

Most of the water that flows down our drains into the sewers is clean and fresh and rats will use the drains for two reasons - the first that in a pinch its a ready food supply as they will eat the food that we rinse of our plates and they will drink the water that flows through the system. The temperature in the drains will be about 4 degrees higher than outside and it rarely falls below freezing point meaning its a warm environment for the rats as well.

The second reason for rats being in the drains is that is a dark safe place free from predators; think of the drains as roads that connect nearly every house in the land together and if there is anything wrong with the drains that lead into your property then rats will exploit that defect and enter the property. Where do the drains run through - the cavity wall of course and once in they will be able to explore the entire building using any openings from the inner skin of the cavity wall to enter bathrooms and kitchens which are the usual places as pipes for waste water run through the wall.

If the rats are getting in from the drains what can you do?

We aim to get you rat free, we don't use poison for this very reason as the introduction of rodenticide will certainly kill the rodents but you need the answer to that most important of questions - "How are the rats getting into my home?" and we do that by tracking the rats as they move about and in the event that we discover activity within the drainage system we will carryout a CCTV survey of the drains for no extra charge.

We want to crack the case every time we get called out to a rat infestation inside a building; no-one should have rats inside their homes or businesses for that matter, in the 21st Century. We look further than other pest control companies to rid you of the rats, if we carryout a drain survey and find that there is a fault below ground then no amount of poison or trapping is going to get you rat free.

We will include simple repairs or the installation of a bung to seal a redundant drain line as part of our treatment, if there are problems that require major works we can advise you of the way forward.
